Careers in Academia
- Understanding the process, researching the campus and department, carefully reviewing expectations outlined in the job description, and considering your “fit” for the position are all critical steps in a successful job search in the academy. Academic institutions emphasize teaching, research and service differently. They have unique and diverse student populations. Their missions drive programming and resource allocations. Employment commitments may be short or long-term and include benefits, or not. Understanding these differences is important when pursuing a position in the academy.

Non-Academic Careers
- A Ph.D. or master’s degree can prepare you for a variety of careers in the public and private sectors. UC Davis Ph.D. and master’s students, and postdoctoral scholars have found successful and rewarding careers outside academia in publishing, public policy, online curriculum design, biotech, environmental design and planning, science writing, sustainable development, media and communications, events planning, performing arts, product management, health care services, and patent law. Our students and scholars work in non-profits, corporations, government and as consultants.

Graduate Student Association
- The UC Davis Graduate Student Association (GSA) represents the over 5,000 academic graduate students and management students on the UC Davis campus. As the officially recognized student government, the GSA serves to empower students and build graduate student community through activities and advocacy.
