Patrick J. Brown - Nut Crop Breeder
Dr. Brown's primary research focus is the integration of genomic and high-throughput phenotyping data into applied plant breeding programs, with a focus on nut crops (currently walnut and pistachio). Key traits of interest for both these crops include phenology (leafing, flowering, and harvest dates), nut size and quality (pellicle color, seal strength, and ease of removal for walnut; percentage of blanks and splits for pistachio), and adaptation to climate change (chilling requirement, salinity tolerance). Some of his other interests include scion-rootstock interactions, preservation and use of Juglans and Pistacia germplasm, and the evolutionary genetics of plant mating systems (heterodichogamy in walnut, dioecy in pistachio). Charlie Brummer - Alfalfa, Forages, Wild Rice, and Spinach Breeder
Dr. Brummer is the Director of the Plant Breeding Center. His research program focuses on developing cultivars and germplasm of alfalfa and other crops for forage and bioenergy uses. His research has focused primarily on investigating ways to improve biomass yield, from traditional breeding method enhancements to the use of molecular markers. Emeriti Faculty Roger Chetelat – Tomato Germplasm (Rick Center)
Dr. Chetelat’s lab studies the reproductive barriers that limit hybridization between cultivated and wild tomato species. Their focus is on unilateral incompatibility, a prefertilization barrier, and they are cloning the underlying genes and exploring their relationship to self-incompatibility. Ted DeJong - Plum and Prune Breeder
Dr. DeJong is the Principle Investigator for a Dried Plum/Prune Breeding and Cultivar Development Program that has as its primary goal the development of new dried plum cultivars that mature earlier or later than the current industry standard cultivar, ‘Improved French.’ Click here to visit Dr. DeJong's lab website.
Luis Diaz-Garcia - Grape Breeder
Luis Diaz-Garcia received his undergraduate degree in Agronomy from Universidad Autonoma Chapingo, and his master's degree in Plant Biotechnology from CINVESTAV-LANGEBIO. He then joined the Plant Breeding and Plant Genetics Program at the University of Wisconsin – Madison and obtained his Ph.D. in 2018. Christine Diepenbrock - Plant Breeding and Crop Nutritional Quality
Dr. Diepenbrock's research program aims to: help understand and improve the nutritional quality and abiotic stress resilience of staple and specialty crops, to ensure a food supply sufficient in quality and quantity for the long term, and; help in the training of plant scientists (and the further development of methods and international and interdisciplinary linkages) to carry on these efforts in a broader cross-section of crops and geographies. Jorge Dubcovsky - Wheat and Small Grain Breeder

Dr. Gradziel’s research focuses on the development of improved breeding lines and varieties of almond and processing peach. Steven J. Knapp – Strawberry Breeder
Dr. Knapp is the Director of the Strawberry Breeding Program. His research focuses on breeding, genetics, and genomics, cultivar development and deployment, understanding and identifying genetic factors underlying economically important phenotypes (e.g., disease resistance, yield, daylight sensitivity, and fruit quality), marker-assisted selection and genomic selection, and conserving and utilizing genetic diversity. Emeriti Faculty Gail Taylor - Leafy Green and Tree Breeder
Gail Taylor was the department chair and professor in the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of California, Davis. Dr. Taylor’s research is focused around leafy green salad crops, particularly watercress and lettuce and fast growing trees for bioenergy. In each she is focused on understanding the genetic and genomic basis of quantitative traits underpinning plant vigour, stress resilience and for leafy crops, nutrient densification.
